Columbia, SC – The Bishop of the Diocese of Charleston The Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone will dedicate St. Sebastian Stadium and The Nieri Family Field House at halftime of this Friday’s football game, which is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Named after the patron saint of athletes, St. Sebastian Stadium features a “Celebration Bermuda Turf” Field, seating for 1,000, a press box and home and visitor concession stands. This wonderful addition to the campus was donated by the Robert Leichtle family.

“We sent two children to Cardinal Newman in the mid and late ’90s,” said Bob and Ann Leichtle. “They received an outstanding education in a great environment. Both played multiple sports each year, participated in student government and made friends for life. When we heard the initial plans to hopefully build a new, larger, modern CN with all athletics on campus, we wanted to help make it a reality and not just a dream. We have one grandchild attending CN now and at least four more heading there. We want them and all other students desiring a great education and athletic opportunities in a Christian environment where God and prayer are allowed to be able to do so.”

The Nieri Family Field House, donated by The Michael Nieri Family, will also be dedicated. The field house is a 7,500 square foot facility that supports athletics with home and visitor locker rooms, an athletic weight room, an athletic trainer center and a wrestling and cheerleading room. “After seeing what an enriching environment my children experienced with a smaller, tighter knit group of like-minded children and families, I felt compelled to further the cause and continue with the vision that was put together by a group of my peers,” said Michael Nieri. “Athletics were a huge part of my kids’ success while attending Cardinal Newman, and some day my grandchildren may have the benefit of the new facility and athletic venues. In the mean time, many young student athletes will enjoy these state-of- the-art facilities. I’m glad that our family could be part of this new campus!”

“Our athletic director, coaches and I are extremely grateful to the Leichtle and Nieri families for their generous support of our student athletes,” said Principal Jacqualine Kasprowski. “These state-of- the-art enhancements to our new campus will enable us to achieve our mission of promoting athletic EXCELLENCE in everything we do.”
